Although you can give a foot massage with socks on, the ability to give a better one exists when the person is not wearing socks or shoes. If you feel there is a need to clean the person’s feet first, you can explain that it is easier to work with by cleaning them off with a washcloth or wet wipe. You could also use aromatherapy oils or scented lotion when you massage the bare feet.
I will briefly cover how to perform bare foot massage on this page. However, if you are looking for a specific routine, please see the how to give a foot massage page .
Creating a comfortable environment is important, you may wish to light scented candles and dim lights to create a relaxing atmosphere. Be sure to ask the person if they are ticklish and be careful not to use light & wispy fingertip strokes if they are.
Ask the recipient to get comfortable in a chair with their feet positioned on a footstool or have them laying on the massage table. Urge them to close their eyes and relax.
- Slowly, begin to clean and prepare the foot with a wet cloth or rag if available. Check to see that there are no warts, open cuts, bunions or wounds that could cause health risks.
- Apply a lotion or cream, gently swirl and rub the cream onto the foot in a method that you desire.

- Start with some basic stretching and rotation of the ankle and foot as shown below:
- Start with the rubbing the foot all over first. Then move into specific foot massage techniques. I share a few of them with you here:
